At Lourdes, our family-centered approach to childbirth builds on each family’s beliefs and choices. Our compassionate, caring, expertly trained staff considers it a privilege to be with you as you start your family or make additions to it. We are committed to providing you and your family with individual attention and support during your entire pregnancy, through labor and delivery and into parenthood.
We believe that education is very important so you are better able to make the right choices for your childbirth experience and caring for your new family. We offer classes for everyone in your family.
Classes are offered in two convenient locations: Lourdes Hospital, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton and Lourdes Vestal 3101 Shippers Road in Vestal, NY (across from Sam’s Club). There is ample parking at both locations and further detail will be provided to you upon registration.
This two-day class will prepare you for the birth of your baby by exploring the stages of labor, coping and relaxation skills, and medical interventions such as induction of labor, epidurals, and cesarean birth. Time is spent on lecture/discussion, videos, and time for practicing coping and relaxation skills (breathing & more). A tour of our Women's & Children's Center and PRIVATE birthing suites is included as a part of this class. This class is designed for the mother-to-be and her labor support person (we ask that only one person come with the mother-to be for class).
Bring two pillows and wear comfortable clothing.
Your baby expects to be breastfed after birth – learn why. This class covers the importance of getting off to a good start, the benefits breastfeeding gives mom, baby, and society as a whole. You will learn when and where to get help if needed. Bring a doll to class for holding/positioning practice. Dads-to-be or other support person is encouraged to attend.

This interactive class is designed to review the basics of newborn care. Topics include: handling, bathing, feeding choices, diapering, and more. Common concerns discussed include: comfort measures, sun/cold exposure, sleeping positions, and more.

This class is designed to help prepare children ages 3-10 for the arrival of a new baby into the family. Class will cover baby’s development during pregnancy, why baby cries, feeding, toy safety, and more. A tour of our Birthing Center is included. Parents will also learn tips on handling jealousy and ensuring older children still feel special.

This class for new dads and dads-to-be is led by veteran dads (and their babies)! Learn how they made it through the first months of parenthood and grew into confident, on-the-job fathers. Learn how to handle a baby. Find out about issues you didn’t know were important and learn to let go of issues you thought were important. In this men-only environment, no question is stupid and no topic off limits.
Dads and dads-to-be will discuss issues including:
- Changes in the new mom and your relationship with mom
- Handling a newborn
- How to calm a crying baby
- Feeding and changing
- Finding a work/home balance
- Introducing pets to baby
- Safety issues
- Handling parents and in-laws
