Our staff are experts at helping patients with heart disease.Lourdes Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a customized plan of exercise, education and counseling created to help patients with heart disease return to a normal way of life after a heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, angioplasty, stabilized angina, valve surgery or heart transplant. It is a link between hospitalization and normal living.

The program's staff of specially trained Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified cardiac nurses, exercise physiologists, dieticians, and pharmacists provide a coordinated team approach to meet the needs of each patient. Based on a patient's medical situation, lifestyle and abilities, an individualized program of exercise, education and counseling is established for each patient.

Through exercise and education, the program will enable a patient to resume a lifestyle compatible with his or her cardiovascular fitness level. The benefits of regular activity in cardiac patients are now widely recognized.

The program runs between 6-12 weeks with three sessions per weeks. Each session involves warm-up, dynamic aerobic exercises, strength training, cool-down, education, and group discussions.

Because cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised and monitored program prescribed by a physician, it is covered by Medicare and most medical insurance contracts.

Patients attend 1 to 1 1/2 hours of exercise on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the duration of the program (between 6-12 weeks). A variety of cardiovascular equipment is used to exercise the heart muscle, which may help to improve heart muscle function and improve blood pressure control. Equipment includes:

  • Ellipticals
  • Recumbent Bikes
  • Recumbent Cross Trainers
  • Stair Climbers
  • Treadmills
  • Upper Body Ergometers

Strength training equipment (such as hand weights) is also used to help strengthen large muscle groups.

Not only will patients improve heart muscle function though this program, they will also realize the benefits of weight loss and blood sugar control (if they are diabetic). (Blood sugar is measure for diabetic patients before and after each session.)

Education is an integral part of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program. We provide information to help patients understand the risk factors for heart disease and how daily routines can be modified to reduce or eliminate risk factors.

The education portion of the program is conducted each Wednesday before the exercise portion of the program. Topics include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Heart
  • Angina
  • Heart Attack
  • Risk Factors
  • Diagnostic Testing
  • Intervention for Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
  • Exercise Guidelines (at our facility and at home)
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Additional Topics Related to Heart and Coronary Artery Disease.

We offer counseling on heart disease risk factor modification:

  • Diet Changes
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Medication & Exercise Compliance
  • Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety

We are also able to refer patients to one-on-one counseling with our Social Work Department, if needed.
