Telehealth

Lourdes at Home has implemented a technology that will help patients monitor their vital signs and manage their treatment in the comfort of their own home. Telehealth is a new system that allows a patient to check blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight and oxygen levels and have them sent to a Lourdes at Home nurse’s computer, allowing the nurse to then make sure all measurements are normal and acceptable.

The remote device which is hooked to a phone line in a patient’s home, weighs less than 3 pounds and has an LED display that allows the patient to interact with the system by simply touching a button. The remote unit has vocal prompts for communicating with the patient through verbalized instructions for using the measurement devices. This could include a blood pressure machine, scale, and pulse oximeter. This allows the patient’s current health status, symptoms, and activities to be monitored on a daily basis.

Patients that tend to benefit the most from Telehealth are usually those who have repeated hospitalizations or ER visits for chronic conditions that require chronic disease management, whose diet and medication changes need frequent monitoring, and patients that are alert and able to comprehend directions, able to see and hear and those who are willing to cooperate. Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, and obesity are a few of the conditions that may require the use of Telehealth.

The benefits of Telehealth are many…the patient gains peace of mind knowing that they are being monitored frequently, diminishing the number of ambulance calls, emergency room visits and hospitalizations. It also reduces the amount of time they would spend in the hospital.
