A bone density exam is a quick and easy exam that will assist
the physician in assessing your bone health. This test uses
enhanced, low dose x-ray technology to measure your degree of
bone loss. A bone density test is used to determine if you have,
or are at risk of, osteoporosis.
How do I get one?
First you must obtain a written order from your physician with a valid
ICD-9 code(s). Once you have a written order from your physician,
call our Central Scheduling office at 607-798-5723 to schedule an
appointment. Please have your written order and insurance cards
ready when you call.
How do I prepare for a bone density test?
You will need to provide a brief history including any prescription
medications you might be taking. On the day of the exam, please don’t take
any calcium supplements or multivitamins. Arrive 15 minutes early and
stop in Central Registration in the main lobby of the hospital to complete
any necessary paperwork.
How is a bone density test done?
Bone density tests are quick, easy and painless. You will be asked to lie
on a padded table for a few minutes while we scan your hips and lumbar
spine.
How do I get my results?
The resulting scan, along with an interpretation from the radiologist,
will be forwarded to your physician.
Where is the Bone Densitometry department located?
Bone Densitometry is located on the main floor of Lourdes in the
Rehabilitation Therapy Department, just past the Atrium. When you arrive,
please be sure to sign in at the front desk.
