An integral part of Lourdes Hospital since 1955, Lourdes
Auxiliary has adapted as needed to fulfill its mission to promote
and advance Lourdes welfare. Auxiliary members - both men and
women - represent a cross section of our community. New members are
always welcome!

History
Perceiving a need for Catholic women to participate in service
to the community, Msgr. Joseph Toomey, the first director of
Catholic Charities in Binghamton, formed the Patronesses in 1937.
In 1954, Lourdes Hospital administrator Sister Celeste requested
that the Patronesses organize a women's auxiliary. On February 2,
1955, in response to letters sent to interested individuals and
women's groups of all faiths, 84 women met to launch Lourdes
Hospital Auxiliary.
The need for separate entities - Auxiliary and Volunteer - became evident as the hospital
grew. The Auxiliary would focus on fund raising and social
activities while the Volunteers, under the direction of Volunteer
Services, made contributions of time and talent to many areas of
the hospital.

members informed and connected.
